What is Existential Therapy?

The existential approach is a type of humanistic therapy. Humanistic therapy is an umbrella term for therapies which focus on free-will and achieving your full human potential. The central belief is that human nature is inherently good and that people can cultivate their own intuitive sense of growth and fulfillment. Humanistic therapy is interested in the whole person as an individual, and tends not to concentrate on specific symptoms or problems.

Existential therapy is interested in exploring existence—ie., what it means to be alive. The therapist aims to approach this exploration with a sense of openness and wonder, and avoids fitting the client into pre-established interpretations. Existential therapy considers that a person’s nature is not fixed; we are constantly creating ourselves.

Existential therapy confronts fundamental questions regarding human existence: "Who am I?" “What is my purpose in life?”  “Am I free or determined?” “How do I deal with my own mortality?” "Does my existence have any meaning or significance?" "How shall I live my life?"

Practically speaking, existential therapy is a collaborative dialogue between two humans.
